LEICA MARINE GPS WINS ORDER TO FIT AIS ON HOLLAND AMERICA FLEET

Leica Marine GPS has received an order to supply 14 Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) for the Holland America Line fleet of cruise ships.

Holland America Line placed the order for 14 MX 420/8 AIS systems with Leica's authorized dealer, Radio Holland USA, which will also provide installation, integration and commissioning support for the equipment. The installations will begin in March 2002.

The MX 420/8 was introduced by Leica last year as a fully integrated solution to shipboard DGPS and AIS requirements. The MX 420/8 AIS complies with all IMO, ITU and IEC standards for DGPS and AIS equipment, and satisfies the IMO carriage requirements for AIS, which will come into effect starting July 1, 2002.

Gunnar Mangs, Leica Marine GPS business director, said: "Holland America Line will be one of the first to outfit its entire fleet of cruise ships with AIS in advance of the carriage requirement deadline. Holland America's commitment to safety at sea is commendable."

"The MX 420/8 combines the industry's most accurate marine GPS receiver, a built-in dual-channel DGPS beacon receiver and an IMO-compliant AIS transponder system, with a single control and display unit," said Mangs. "The system has been designed to meet all current and projected IMO carriage requirements for GPS, DGPS and AIS."

Mangs noted that Radio Holland is one of Leica's key dealers serving the international deep-sea market, providing sales and service for Leica products worldwide.

Holland America Line, founded in 1873, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Carnival Corporation, the largest cruise company in the world.
